Chapter Twenty

Scott just wanted to grab the glass and get the hell out of that building. “I’m not sure I, um—”

Azatoth’s eyes glittered with malice. “I suppose I could just get straight to finding Betsy.”

Scott sighed. “Sure. A walk sounds great.”

Azatoth put a hand on his arm.

He found himself standing outside, looking at water. “Where are we?”

“Pier Forty-Six.” Azatoth kept her eyes ahead and pointed. “Over there is New Jersey. Sometimes I stand here for hours.”

He didn’t answer. He felt outmatched in this game of cat and mouse. Instead, he stood in silence, taking in the view.

Azatoth started walking, and he followed her toward the barriers. At that moment, if he’d had Harpe, he would have plunged it into her back.

She put her hands on the barrier, then leaned back on her heels and swayed from side to side.

Scott remained still but followed her with his gaze. She turned around and leaned against the barrier.

She cast a look in the direction of the water taxis to the side of them and sighed. “Scotty, I’m bored.”

Scott intended to blink but left his eyes closed for a long moment as he took in her statement. He opened them. “Bored?”

Azatoth nodded. “I didn’t take the best part of two hundred years, shredding my body and waiting second after agonizing second for it to reassemble, to come here and spend my days reading executive summaries and cost-benefit analysis reports. I’m bored.”

Scott was hit with the momentary horror of imagining Lexi doing what the demon had described to leave that place. He swallowed. “Then why did you come here?”

She wandered a little way down the barrier, then leaned against it again and folded her arms. “I came to watch it all burn. To make it all burn.”

Scott swallowed. He didn’t want to ask this question, but he didn’t seem able to stop himself. “Then why haven’t you?”

Azatoth looked across the water at New Jersey. “I like waffles and coffee and ice cream sundaes. I like the water. If I lay waste to this realm, all those things will be gone.”

“It sounds to me like you need a vacation,” Scott suggested.

“A vacation?” She raised an amused eyebrow.

Scott shrugged. “Sure. You could learn to waterski or go diving.”

Azatoth turned to face him. “I’ve been toying with a novel idea. Lately, it just won’t leave me.” She took the packet of antacids from her pocket and rolled it between her fingers. “I thought there might be a possibility…”

Scott held his breath. That you’re insane? Definitely!

“That Alicia is somehow still alive in here,” Azatoth finished.

Scott froze. “What makes you think that?”

“It’s not that I don’t want to burn the whole stinking race of you to the ground, but every time I think about it, I feel nauseous.” She sighed again. “That would explain why Lexi didn’t kill me when she had the opportunity.”

Scott snorted. “I’m pretty sure if Lexi believed her sister was still alive, it’s because you told her that her sister was still in there.”

Azatoth giggled. “Oh. Yes, I did do that, didn’t I? I miss Lexi.
